Two Indie Star Trek Studios You Should Know About

There are two independent Star Trek studios out there you should know about, but may not. Those studios are Starbase Studios and Farragut Studios. Both are truly ambitious and inspiring having built permanent sets for Star Trek web series and films to be made on...over and over. Permanent sets like these allow more stories to be filmed and told, more efficiently, and for less time and money.

Starbase Studios, based in Oklahoma City, is a full bridge set from the Star Trek TOS time-line and is open to all film makers. With over three years of research and effort, Starbase Studios is the creation of childhood Star Trek fans, Richard Wells and Scott Johnson. They recognized that if someone built permanent sets like these, more indie Star Trek would be made. It is like a Star Trek Field of Dreams. And film makers are coming. In December 2013, the well known and very long awaited Star Trek fan film Yorktown: A Time to Heal (by Stan Woo and John Atkin) was able to shoot some important opening and closing scenes that had been holding up some of the production. And the recently released, and very well received, Starship Valiant by Michael L. King was shot there.

Filming there is free, but donations are accepted to help with studio costs. Made available to film makers are the 360 degree Constitution Class bridge Set (a transporter and medical bay set are currently being built), props, costumes, audio/video and lighting equipment, and local actors and crew!!

They also have a volunteer program where you can work on sets, props, etc. CLCIK HERE for info. There is also an online education program on their website and a forum where you can network with writers, actors, musicians, and others. To check out the full website go to http://starbasestudios.net

Next up is Farragut Studios. Starship Farragut is a much loved and well established web series (since 2007) that partnered up with Vic Mignogna (Far From Home, LLC) and Dracogen Investments and relocated from the D.C. Area to Kingsland, Ga. There they acquired a 10,000 square feet facility to build multiple permanent TOS Enterprise sets. Not only is Starship Farragut filmed here but so is the hugely successful, and awesome to the core, Star Trek Continues.

There is also an annual Farragut Fest which this year will be December 6 & 7. There you can walk through the sets, meet cast and crew, attend panels, shop dealers and check out Special Guests! For ticket, dealer, guest and press enquirers click this link: http://farragutfest.com/

You can also donate to Farragut Studios at either of these website:

So go check out their website and shows, share them, and please donate if you can. They are two very rare studios that help give us really great indie Star Trek shows and films.
